ABOUT DIANA
"Diana Lang Hinkle's lush renderings of the female form are steeped in the extravagant colors of Southern California where she grew up. Hinkle fits neatly and exuberantly within the colorful rubric of California painting established by pioneers like Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud and David Hockney. Her bold and intuitive use of California's vernacular pallette--shades of lemon, lime, pink and blue--evoke the skies, fields and beaches reminiscent of her childhood. Whereas Diebenkorn drew inspiration from the rolling hills and curves of California's distinct landscape, Hinkle's work is inspired by the landscape of the female form. Her paintings are unabashed, almost ecstatic in their celebration of the female body. Raised steps away from the Pacific Ocean, Hinkle recalls entire summers in her bathing suit. Women's bodies were fixtures in the landscape. Hinkle's paintings celebrate those bodies in all their various shapes and sizes." --Georgia Lee, Curator for Museum West, San Francisco |
